JARID2 or the Jumonji protein is a PRC2 component in embryonic stem cells required for multi-lineage differentiation and recruitment of PRC1 and RNA Polymerase II to developmental regulators. It is essential for embryogenesis, including neural tube formation. It plays a key role in differentiation of embryonic stem cells and normal development. Defects in JARID2, characterized by PRC1 and PRC2 mutants, show a severely compromised capacity for successful differentiation towards neural or mesodermal fates. JARID2 is an excellent marker for studying differentiation patterns in induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and embyonic stem cells (eSCs). |
