Arginase-1 is a cytosolic metalloenzyme encoded by the ARG1 gene and is expressed primarily in hepatocytes. The type I isoform of Arginase-1 mediates the urea cycle by catalyzing the hydrolysis of arginine to urea and ornithine. A deficiency in the arginase-1 enzyme is associated with Argininemia, an inherited autosomal recessive disorder characterized by an excess of arginine and ammonia in the bloodstream (hyperammonemia). ARG1 is often used as a specific marker to distinguish benign and malignant hepatic tumors as it is highly specific for hepatocytes.
