TRIM RING finger protein TRIM2, a ubiquitin ligase, is highly expressed in the nervous system. It binds to neurofilament light subunit (NF-L);and regulates NF-L ubiquitination. Deficiencies in TRIM2 increases NF-L level in axons and NF-L-filled axonal swellings in cerebellum, retina, spinal cord, and cerebral cortex.

These deficiencies eventually lead to neurodegeneration, tremors and ataxia. It is proposed that TRIM2 has neuroprotection properties.
