Tau is a relatively low molecular weight member of the microtubule associated protein or MAP. The recombinant protein used to make this antibody is the shortest version of the 8 human tau proteins, so the antibody is expected to bind to all 8 isoforms. Tau is a major component of the neurofibrillary tangles of Alzheimer's disease. In addition, numerous different point mutations in the tau gene are causative of Fronto-temporal dementia with Parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 |

E18 Primary Rat Hippocampal Neurons (PC35101) fixed and immunostained with Tua/MAPT+(CH22113). The cells were also stained in green with our monoclonal antibody to Ubiquitin C-terminal Hydrolase 1 (UCHL1,MO22109). Since the perikarya contain both UCHL1 and Tau, the red and green signals superimpose, giving a yellow color, while the processes, which contain relatively much more tau, appear red. Blue stain is DAPI and reveals cell nuclei of some non neuronal cells in these cultures.

Embryonic day-18 primary rat hippocampal cells (PC 35101) grown over pLL-coated 6-well plate for 48 hours. Green: anti-rat TAU/MAPT (CH22113), blue: DAPI. Scale bar = 25 um.

Blots of crude rat brain extract. Tau protein is expressed as up to 8 different isoforms of different molecular weight and so appears as multiple closely spaced bands covering the region of the blot from 50kDa to 70kDa. Lane 11 was probed with CPCA-Tau while lane 12 was probed with tau monoclonal antibody. Protocol on Data-sheet.
